Clean, to us, is a formulation discipline, not a label. Every ingredient is selected with intention and integrity, for a defined role in the formula. We leave out what your skin doesn't need (sulfates, parabens, phthalates, soap and mineral oil) and build around mild, plant-derived ingredients and well-researched actives that still perform on skin. What rinses away matters too, so we choose ingredients with their environmental impact in mind.

Phthalates are chemicals sometimes added to perfume to make a scent last longer. On an ingredient list, the whole perfume shows up as one word, "Fragrance", so you can't see whether they're inside. Several phthalates are banned from cosmetics in the EU, including some classified as hormone disruptors. We ask our fragrance house to leave all phthalates out of every scent we use.

IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, sets the global safety standards for fragrance ingredients. They're based on research by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials and reviewed by an independent panel of experts. For each ingredient, the standards decide whether it's banned, capped at a maximum level, or must meet a purity rule — and those limits change with the type of product, so a lotion that stays on your skin gets stricter limits than a wash you rinse off. Our fragrance house issues an IFRA certificate for every scent we use, confirming it meets these limits for the exact product it goes into.

Most fragrances are a blend of many aroma ingredients. The European Union identified 26 of them — such as linalool, limonene, citral and geraniol — as the ones most often linked to skin reactions in people who are already sensitive to fragrance. The fragrance in our Skin Elixir Serum Lotion has been analysed by our fragrance house and is free of all 26.
